Volunteer Annalisa took adoptable JOY out on a doggie day trip on Friday. Here's her report! Joy is such a sweet, gentle dog. She knows the "sit" command very well and has the one of the best recalls of any dog I've taken out for a day trip yet! Every time I called her or whistled, Joy came running back to me immediately. She takes treats gently and walks pretty well on leash. Joy also is very friendly with and loving towards people. She rides well in the car. And she's beautiful - Joy always looks like she has a smile on her face. Joy has so many good qualities! We started our day trip with a little bit of play time in my fenced-in yard. Joy LOVES to play with big rubber balls and I didn't have any, but she explored a little bit. We practiced "sit" and she mostly followed me around. I fed Joy in the mudroom, and she ate fast but had no problems with me putting on her "adopt me" vest. Joy and I had a wonderful hike at West Rock. We covered two miles, including a quick stop at Lake Wintergreen for a drink. Joy didn't go running into the water, but she did walk up and drink some water to cool down. She kept a nice, easy pace for most of the hike and didn't pull on the leash until towards the end, when we were walking back down on the road. We didn't run into any people or dogs on our hike, so I can't speak to how she reacts in those situations. After the hike, I drove Joy to Amity Bikes to hang out and socialize with people. Joy is so good in the car! She stays sitting or lying down in the back seat very quietly. Joy didn't show any signs of being nervous or shy at the bike shop - she said HI to everyone right away, wiggling and giving kisses. Everyone commented on how happy she seems. I took the leash off and had zero problems. Like I said, Joy has EXCELLENT recall. Anytime a customer came in or the front door opened, I called Joy and she came to me right away. She also stayed with me as long as I asked her to. Guy gave Joy a small box to pick up on the other side of the shop and told me to call her, and she brought the box to me and dropped it on the floor next to me! She's a smarty! Joy is a playful pup, so I tied up an old bike tube and played tug with her for a while. She had a blast! She doesn't like to give the toy up, but if she puts it down or drops it, she doesn't try to tear it out of my hands when I pick it up - instead she waits patiently for me to throw or offer it to her. I almost forgot - we made a quick stop at Hindinger's Farm before the bike shop. Joy was so friendly with the farmer ladies and jumped in one of their laps!
